There are 26 mountain huts spread thoughout the country, most of them located near lakes. Although untended and a bit Spartan, they are solid, empty, free of charge, clean, have a fireplace, running water nearby and have up to 20 or even 60 beds depending on the hut. Most huts, however, can sleep from 4 to 10. Although the huts are rarely crowded, it is wise to take a tent along, especially if you're unlucky and end up sleeping between two snoring individuals. |
"Holiday Camping" is not
permitted outside of the official camp sites but nobody minds if you set
up your tent for a few days as long as you don't make it your permanent
camp. All huts can be accessed via well marked trails or paths and relatively
good maps are available making it rather difficult to get lost even in
bad weather conditions. However, you must remember that it can get cold
at night. A good sleeping bag as well as a a carrymat are essential.
| There are no fierce animals in the mountains and theft or attacks on fisherman apart from the occasional bad tempered cow are unheard of. |

Please leave the huts clean and tidy. The Andorran Government is doing a great job maintaining, cleaning and painting them throughout the year. There is nothing more annoying than arriving at a filthy hut and having to spend the first hour cleaning up other people's mess instead of resting! |

As you can see, the huts are spread out across the country. Three of them are about 1h30 from your apartment, huts number 24 (Coma Pedrosa), number 25 (Les Fonts) and number 26 (Pla de l'Estany). In order to find out exactly where these huts are and how to get to them, we recommend going to the tourist ofice in La Massana (5 min by car from your apartment) and buying a great little booklet called "30 interesting itineraries on the paths of the parishes of Ordino and La Massana. Cost: about 3 Euros. For more information on walking in Andorra, you'll have to go to the only good library there is in Andorra for books on trekking. The shop is easy to find. Drive down towards Escaldes and Andorra la Vella from your apartment, cross La Massana and keep driving down. Drive through the tunnels. The book shop can be found at the first round-about. |
